The Oyo State House of Assembly at its Plenary Sitting on Tuesday condems the negligence attitude of some health workers, leading to untimely deaths and life – threatening injuries of many innocent citizens in the State.
While reacting to the motion sponsored by the Leader of the House, Hon. Sanjo Onaolapo, and Co – sponsored by other members representing Ido ( Hon. Rasak Mabaje), Iseyin/Itesiwaju ( Hon. Dele Adeola ), Ibadan South East 2( Hon. Adeyinka Omikunle ) , and Ibadan North 2 ( Hon. Gabriel Babajide) State constituencies, the lawmakers declared that the rate of irresponsibility displaying and negative attitude of some doctors and nurses in public health care facilities is worrisome, and call for urgent attention.
Presenting the motion, Hon. Onaolapo stated that “numerous reports from relatives of patients on how some doctors would be nowhere to be found and nurses bantering on silliness in their duty posts while patients agonize is a matter of serious concern.”
Sighting the example of a victim, Mrs. Susan Babatunde whose death was as a result of negligence of duty by a doctor that supposed to attend to her at the General Hospital, Ogbomosho Hon. Onaolapo revealed that such attitude has become a reoccurring incident that is always swept under the carpet in some public hospitals in the State.
He revealed further that ” it is noteworthy that the routine inspection of the practice of medical care providers in our hospitals and the sanctions that existed for officers found wanting have been watered down”.
He added that the breach of duty and adequate care by medical professionals to patients has made many people to loose confidence in hospital and seek alternative solutions to their health challenges.” The trust of people in the standard of care being received in our hospitals has warned. This has caused many people to seek alternative solutions to their health challenges. Hence, falling victims of fake online doctors and dangerous herbal concoctions.”
The House has however directed its Standing Committee on Health to invite the Chairman and Permanent Secretary of Hospital Management Board and investigate the causes of the death of late Mrs. Susan Babatunde, so that the culprit can be brought to book and serve as a determent to others of same attitude in the health sector.
