The footage shows the man attempting to hang himself using a noose attached to a banner hanging from a bridge. Prompt action from the courageous onlookers prevented the tragedy from unfolding.
The alarming increase in suicide cases across Nigeria has been a matter of concern. Recent data from the 2019 World Health Organisation (WHO) report titled “Suicide in the World: Global Health Estimates” highlights Nigeria as one of the epicenters of suicide worldwide, with an estimated rate of 17.3 suicides per 100,000 individuals. This figure surpasses both the global average (10.5 per 100,000) and the African average (12.0 per 100,000), as stated in the report.
