Former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele has recently been linked to a massive estate in Abuja, comprising 753 duplexes and other apartments, which have been recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The EFCC obtained a court order to forfeit the property, valued at billions of naira, after investigations revealed that it was acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities. Emefiele is currently facing trial on several corruption charges, including allegations related to the redesign of the naira.
The recovery of the estate is considered one of the largest asset recoveries by the EFCC since its inception in 2003.
The development has sparked widespread outrage and calls for greater accountability among public officials in Nigeria.
