In the ongoing political crisis in Ondo State, the State House of Assembly has escalated the situation by demanding the resignation of Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. This demand comes after a meeting held between President Bola Tinubu, the House members, and other stakeholders to address the crisis.
During the Assembly’s plenary session on Tuesday, Speaker Olamide Oladiji revealed that one of the resolutions reached at the meeting with Tinubu was for the deputy governor to write an undated resignation letter and submit it to the President. The Speaker, along with the Secretary of the Ondo State Government and the state Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, were appointed to monitor compliance with the resolutions.
Emphasizing the importance of adhering to the resolutions, the Speaker warned all parties involved against violating the agreements reached during the meeting. The resolutions included maintaining the status quo, terminating all impeachment proceedings, withdrawing court cases, and ensuring that the party leadership and structures remained intact. It was also stated that Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa would continue to perform the functions of the deputy governor’s office.
The Speaker clarified that the lawmakers were acting within the mandate given to them by their constituents, demonstrating courage and asking questions when necessary.
During the plenary session, the Assembly approved the screening of 51 members for the Interim Caretaker Committee for the local government areas and Local Council Development Areas, as requested by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
Security presence was heightened around the Assembly complex during the session. Attempts to reach the deputy governor for comment were unsuccessful, but a political associate expressed dissatisfaction with the Assembly’s decision, stating that it contradicted the resolution reached at the previous meeting.
The situation remains uncertain as the deputy governor awaits the Assembly’s declaration of him as the acting governor before returning to the state.
