In a jaw-dropping turn of events, Esther Hamidu, a credit officer of a microfinance bank, has been apprehended by the Ogun State Police Command after eluding capture with a staggering sum of N1.97m, belonging to bank customers. The audacious act unfolded over a period spanning from March to December 2023.
According to reports, the alarm was raised by a vigilant branch manager in Abeokuta, the state capital, who noticed the non-remittance of the customers’ contributions. Despite relentless efforts by the police to bring the suspect to justice, Hamidu managed to evade capture, disappearing into thin air.
However, an undisclosed source within the state police command has revealed that the elusive culprit has now been apprehended. Confirming the arrest, Omolola Odutola, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, disclosed that Hamidu was captured in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Friday.
“Yes, she has been arrested. She has been transferred from Ibadan, where she was arrested, to Ogun State. She has confessed to the crime. She could not explain what she did with the money,” shared Odutola with PUNCH Metro on Sunday.
The captivating saga continues as authorities delve deeper into the mind-boggling mystery surrounding the fate of the embezzled funds.
