Yoruba Nation Agitator, Sunday Igboho, has been released from custody in the Benin Republic after a two-year trial.
Sunday Igboho, also known as Sunday Adeyemo, announced on Sunday that he is now legally free to leave Cotonou and return to Nigeria and other countries. He stated that he has fulfilled all the legal conditions attached to his bail and is eagerly planning to come back to his home country, Nigeria.
The embattled agitator became a controversial figure after declaring the sovereignty of the Yoruba Nation in March 2021. He initiated a campaign against killer herdsmen and kidnappers in the South-West states, calling on Yoruba people in other regions to return home.
Following a nocturnal invasion of his Ibadan residence by the Department of State Services in July 2021, Sunday Igboho fled Nigeria. The DSS claimed to have found weapons and ammunition in his apartment during the invasion, a judgment that was later overturned by the Court of Appeal in August 2022.
Sunday Igboho was subsequently arrested at the Cardinal Bernardin International Airport in Cotonou while attempting to flee to Germany. Despite attempts by the former Nigerian government to repatriate him, they were unsuccessful.
Now that Sunday Igboho has regained his freedom, he plans to return to Nigeria and continue his activism.
