At least two people were killed on Wednesday, following a clash between personnel of Oyo State Security Network, codenamed Amotekun Corps and residents of Tapa in Ibarapa North local government area of Oyo State.
Also, operation vehicles, houses and other items belonging to the security outfit were destroyed in the fracas.
According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity , violence broke out when Amoteken personnel were invited to enforce the 10pm carnival ban in the state.
He said some indigenes, mostly youths who were having a carnival that was supposed to end by 10pm refused to adhere to the stipulated time, due to the level of fun and enjoyment at the party.
“The Amotekun operatives came around to halt the carnival which they first resisted but at the end of the day, they decided to end it. Those boys were having a carnival and they are probably expected to close by 10pm which they did not. The Amotekun operatives told them to stop and it took the boys some time to stop the sound.
“In the course of trying to stop the carnival, there was an argument, which made the boys to start stoning at the Amotekun officers.
“Along the line, the Amotekun operatives started shooting directly at them and now, at least three people have been confirmed dead while many people were injured.
“Bullets are being removed from some people who did not partake in the carnival at all,” the source said.
The Commandant of Amotekun in the state, Col. Olayinka Olayanju (rtd) confirmed the incident in a short message, adding that two people died from the incident.
“Two killed, Amotekun properties destroyed, Houses of operatives burnt. It started with enforcing ban of carnivals. Details later,” Olayanju said.
